Emma Galli - What Are They Doing Now? [Summer Internship Edition] featuring Emma Galli

+UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication each summer picks a team of students "to investigate the political, economic, and scientific tensions behind US energy through advanced reporting to engage citizens and inspire informed decision-making." Known as Powering a Nation the team recently released their film for this year, "Over Water Under Fire!

Listen to +Emma Galli story:

Emma Galli '13, Graphic design sequence
Co-editor in Chief, Interface Designer, Motion Graphic Artist, +Powering a Nation

"Powering A Nation gave me the opportunity to collaborate with a team of extremely talented journalists to work on a project focused on experimentation. We wanted to produce something that would make people want to stop and think about our content and created an absolutely stunning 20-minute interactive experience combining video, motion graphics, and written pieces. Our goal this year was to integrate each medium into one multimedia piece and I am proud to say that we accomplished this, and more. I’ve never been part of such a cohesive team and am excited to take what I learned over the past 8-weeks and apply it to more creative story telling in the future."

Where Are They Now? [2013 Summer Internship Edition] featuring Chris Helton

+Chris Helton , '15
Employee Communications and Change Management Intern, Duke Energy

"As a part of my job, I'm working with the Employee Communications team to create and disseminate relevant content for our near 30,000 employees. There have been so many highlights! A few weeks ago I flew down to one of Duke Energy's plants in Florida with company executives. I was able to field calls from the media during a nuclear plant emergency drill. Best of all probably, my boss (a J-School alum) gave me the chance to write an online summary about the appointment of our new CEO!"

Where Are They Now? [2013 Summer Internship Edition] featuring Meredith Goodwin

+Meredith Goodwin goes back to the good ol' days of my first dabble with +Google+. Meredith was one of our most active contributors to +Best Away Game Ever and is now doing big things in the ad world before finishing up a semester early at +UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication

+Meredith Goodwin '14
Account Intern, +WilsonMcGuire Creative

"Interning with WilsonMcGuire this summer allowed me to go beyond what I would learn in a classroom to see what really goes on at an advertising agency. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including the 2014 U.S. Open golf tournament account, sit in on client meetings, attend branding brainstorming sessions, and present research to CEOs. My favorite part by far was driving down the road and passing digital billboards I had worked on for the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro. To see something come together from inception to finished product has made a career in advertising feel real for the first time."

My Feature Article on Scandal's Emmy nominated actor Dan Bucatinsky

Congrats to +Dan Bucatinsky on his Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series on +Scandal.

I was lucky enough to interview Dan last spring for an article I had to write for +UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication Diversity in the Media class.

The assignment was to write a feature article on a prominent +#LGBT figure in the media. I was addicted to Scandal and had read "Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?," so Dan seemed like the obvious choice. It couldn't be that hard to get an interview with him, right?

I wasn't thinking clearly, because, he was "kind of" out of my league.

But, who knew all it would take was one tweet?

After some email correspondence and an interview, I turned in my class assignment about a prominent Hollywood producer and actor, and as of last Thursday, a three time Emmy nominee!

Congrats to Dan on his Emmy nomination and a big thanks for a Hollywood actor and producer of his scale for helping out an amateur journalism student on a class assignment.

Does This Role Make Me Look...Gay?

Just like any middle-aged man, Dan Bucatinsky’s life is a constant juggle to balance marriage, children, work, and an attempted assassination of the President. The later only occurs on television, but as far as the rest, Bucatinsky’s art has recently been imitating his life.

Every Thursday night, America tunes in to see +Shonda Rhimes (executive producer, +Grey's Anatomy) universe of fascinatingly complex characters push their ethical boundaries in the nation’s capital on +ABC Television Network soapy drama, Scandal. Bucatinsky plays James Novak, a White House reporter married to the White House Chief of Staff with dreams to adopt a child.

The show has received critical support for its portrayal of diverse characters with equal weight given to each storyline. Bucatinsky’s character and on-screen husband portray the struggles of a gay couple seeking to adopt a child in the US.

“I think this role on Scandal is a great opportunity to introduce many who don't know gay people to a couple ‘just like them’ - if you can forgive, you know, the attempted murder and election rigging and lying and cheating,” said Bucatinsky.

Bucatinsky, who is married with two children in real life, has experienced many of these same tribulations, and recently published stories of his own humorous challenges in last summer’s Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?

Bucatinsky’s candidness with his personal life did not begin when he started acting; he stepped out to pursue his Hollywood dreams, while stepping into the closet with his sexuality.

“I was convinced I had to keep my ‘personal life’ private in order to be a truly respected actor,” said Bucatinsky. “I feared I would not be hired and that the roles would be limited and limiting.”

Now, 20 years later, Bucatinsky has no need to fear unemployment. Besides his work on Scandal, Bucatinsky is a consulting producer on Grey’s Anatomy as well as Lisa Kudrow's producing partner on Web Therapy, a +Showtime comedy recently picked up for a third season.

With high ratings and an even more impressive holding as Thursday’s No. 1 Most Social Broadcast Series, Scandal carries a unique platform as a sounding board for diversity in the media.

Bucatinsky works in a powerful circle of Hollywood’s most successful writers and producers who all have considerable spheres of influence.

When asked what role scripted television plays in shaping public opinion of the LGBT community, Bucatinsky pointed to entertainment.

“Television can play a powerful role in portraying characters that are true-to-life, complex, honest, open, political, etc. I think it happens best when it comes in the form of entertainment - and happens inadvertently rather than in a forced agenda.”

Bucatinsky feels fortunate to play a character with so many similarities to his own experiences and hopes his role will inspire others.

“I would hope that the role acts as inspiration to many. That's all any of us can hope for in life, I believe, to inspire others in some way. And hope that they, in turn, will inspire others.”

Bucatinsky continues to use these platforms to advocate for important issues in the LGBTQ community including marriage equality, adoption, and programs encouraging LGBTQ youth (+The Trevor Project).

Bradford Bridergers - Where Are They Now? [2013 Summer Internship Edition] featuring Bradford Bridgers

Bradford Bridgers, '14
Intern, Viacom (Nickelodeon & BET Networks)

"This summer I've been fortunate enough to participate in two internships within the Viacom corporation. I'm currently interning with Nickelodeon Production in its Events & Original Programming department as well as with BET Networks in its Public Relations department. At Nickelodeon, I assist with competitive research for the upcoming events, such as the Kid's Choice Awards. I also help review outlines and screen rough cuts from episodes of the new season of Degrassi. At BET, I assist with preparing daily news clips to distribute to the entire staff, brainstorm ideas to increase publicity of original programming, such as "Being Mary Jane" and "The Game", and I'm also working on planning and executing a photo shoot for the entire PR team. There's never a dull moment working at Viacom. Ok, that might be a stretch, but the casual environment and welcoming, energetic employees help make each day an exciting learning experience."

Where Are They Now? [Summer Internship Edition] HOA Episode 1

Last week, I hosted +UNC J-school Ambassadors first ever Hangout On Air with +UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication  interns all over the country (and one in Brazil)!
It's unreal how many UNC J-schools students are scattered around the country interning at the coolest companies. And I've had at least one class with every single person in this video. (They are real people and I've seen them work to get where they are! It's possible!)

It's a cliche, but it's true; at #unc you learn just as much (if not more) from your peers as you do in the classroom.

Proud of all of you!

Where Are They Now? [2013 Summer Internship Edition] featuring Chandler Leik

I met Chandler Leik my senior year of high school and never would have thought I would take my final exam of college sitting next to her. Chandler is living out every girls dream - working in the fashion industry in New York City. (search: MTV circa 2010 and Lauren Conrad)

Digital Intern at Bollare Communications

"I help moderate and manage various social media accounts of clients, package for shipments/messengers, maintain and gain social media fans for clients, blogger outreach and maintenance of positive relationships, contribute to creative content of social media campaigns, contests and platforms in general. My favorite part is working with clothes on a daily basis and sending them to celebrities and famous magazines. I love when bloggers come into the showroom to look at products because I keep up with #fashionblogs daily so I get really excited because they're like celebrities to me. Also, what girl in fashion wouldn't want to work on 5th ave in NYC surrounded by stores and trendy people? I'm still in awe of the fashion industry and the people involved. "

Where Are They Now? [2013 Summer Internship Edition] featuring Georgia Walker

I was excited to have Georgia Walker on as the first Where Are They Now feature. I only met Georgia in April, a month before I graduated, and am very glad we had time to get to know each other.
Not one to slow down, Georgia will return to Chapel Hill from her summer in New York stepping into the role of UNC’s Class of 2014 Senior Class President. Best of luck, Georgia!
